- ItemA Critical Examination of the Societal Structural Transformations in Sri Lanka Facilitated by Private Television Channels During the Turn of the Millennium.(NSBM Green University, 2023-12) Nayanapriya, M.G.T.; Ranatunga, S.A.The invention of television diverted society onto a different path, as it entertained people with a consistent array of various content. This industry fills the gap that other sectors, such as photography and films, cannot. However, in the context of Sri Lanka, television was introduced in 1979 with the Independent Television Network and in 1982 with the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation. In the first decade of television in Sri Lanka, it aimed to accomplish the media literacy of Sri Lankans. However, after granting permission to private television channels to broadcast their content in Sri Lankan territory, the intention of television broadcasting changed. Due to the profit-oriented journey among Sri Lankan television channels, their intention shifted towards grabbing the audience's attention by telecasting entertaining, educational, and other important content. This trend mainly improved with the beginning of the year 2000, a remarkable year that people all over the world had awaited, believing it would change traditional aspects of the world. This ideology influenced television channels in Sri Lanka, and private television channels always tried to capture the attention of Sri Lankan audiences with entertainment-oriented programs. This effort was a success, and the Sri Lankan community frequented those entertainment programs. As a result, a significant impact occurred in the society of Sri Lanka because of these programs. This trend mainly caused the establishment of pop culture in Sri Lanka. When evaluating the conduct of private television channels in Sri Lanka, a noticeable transformation in societal structure becomes evident. Additionally, the substantial disparity between academia and the industry may impede the advancement of the Sri Lankan television industry.
- ItemA Critical Review of Talent Management Practices and its Impact on Business Performance(NSBM Green University, 2017-12) Karunathilake, K.G.G.S.Talent management practices (TMP) have significant implications for organizations in the contemporary business environment. This has led to the adoption of new approaches towards understanding and evaluating talent management in organizations. Human resource professionals and practitioners have recognized talent as the valuable and longer resource to face competition in the business world. Talent management practices (TMP) mainly consist of acquisition, nurturing, retaining and talent leadership. It has been theorized by many scholars, that talent management practices (TMP) have a positive impact on business performance (BP). Nevertheless, practitioners’ opinions contradict this phenomenon. Thus, the study has taken into consideration this contradictory state and critically reviews the literature on the impact of talent management practices on business performance. The review of literature evidenced that business maturity also affects business performance consistent with TMP. Such understanding is relevant for researchers and practitioners to further develop the work in this field.
- ItemA Genealogy of Ethnography Hepls Understanding its Everlasting Relevance(National School of Business Management, 2016-12) Larrañaga, O.A.F.
- ItemA Methodological Journey Through Ethnography(National School of Business Management, 2016-12) Ranasinghe, S.B.Reflecting on my commitment to an ethnographic study, this paper argues that an employment of ethnographic methods in a management control study can enable the marginalised to be heard and shared against postcolonial-patriarchal controls. It illustrates how my pre-fieldwork exposure shaped an in-fieldwork engagement into a post-fieldwork reflection until I realised my theoretical contribution: a management control perspective on the marginalised voices of female participants. The message here is that only such close engagements can unpack a multivocality of the researched, which positivistic research methods cannot achieve.

- ItemA Qualitative Research Approach Adopted in an Egyptian Management Control Study(National School of Business Management, 2016-12) Ganna, M.This paper shows the details of how I adopted a qualitative research methodology to study the role of management control practices in global production networks (GPNs). The case study is of an Egyptian garment factory that acts as a supplier for a French retailer of sports clothes. The methodology adopted enabled me to trace the supplier-customer relationship, the customer’s requirements in terms of the product specification, quality and time of delivery, and the development of the factory along the production network as well as improving the visibility of the factory’s operations to achieve instant and continuous control. The paper highlights my reflections on the experience through which I realised an intellectual value of doing a case study.
- ItemA Study of the Relationship Between Personality Traits and Job Performance of the Academic Staff Members of the NSBM Green University Town(NSBM Green University, 2017-12) Perera, U.D.T.B.; De Silva, M.T.D.This study examines the relationship between personality and job performance of the academic staff members of the NSBM Green University Town in Sri Lanka. Job performance is a matter of critical importance to contemporary performance-based organizations, which increasingly seek out employees of high calibre. Among many factors which influence job performance, personality plays a prominent role as it affects the efficiency and effectiveness of employee job performance. This study confirmed the findings of previous researches, as they have proven that personality is a valid predictor which has a statistically significant, strong positive relationship with job performance. The study also examined the relationship of each big five dimension namely, extraversion, neuroticism, agreeableness, conscientiousness and openness with job performance of the academic staff members at NSBM Green University Town. Findings of the study confirmed that all of the aforesaid dimensions had a statistically significant strong and moderate positive relationship with job performance. Findings also confirmed that they were significantly valid predictors of job performance. Hence, this study provides new insights to the management of the education sector indicating that personality should be given due consideration in human resource management practices in their organizations.
- ItemAn Empirical Study of Success Factors in Transforming Accounting and Engineering Professionals into Entrepreneurs in the SME Sector, Sri Lanka(National School of Business Management, 2015-06) Thiranagama, R. K.This paper examines the success factors in transforming Accounting and Engineering Professionals into entrepreneurs in the Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) sector in Sri Lanka. Employing a qualitative research approach methodology, twelve semi-structured interviews and three focus group discussions were conducted with entrepreneurs who have successfully become entrepreneurs in the SME sector. The findings of the study clearly indicate that personal success factors such as risk taking, need for achievement, internal locus of control, professional confidence, passion, need for recognition, need to serve society and opportunity seeking help Engineers and Accountants to emerge as entrepreneurs. It is further influenced by environmental success factors such as family background, perceived government policies, social networks and entrepreneurial culture. Moreover, it reveals that entrepreneurial engineers tend to start ventures in the field of technology whereas entrepreneurial accountants belong to various types of disciplines. The paper concludes with a discussion on the practical implications of the findings for Engineers, Accountants and national policy makers.
- ItemAn Inquiry into the Causes of Inflation in Sri Lanka: An Eclectic Approach(National School of Business Management, 2016-06) Jayawardana, D.; Jayasinghe, P.The objective of this study is to identify the short and long-run determinants of inflation in Sri Lanka. It follows an eclectic approach to seeking possible determinants of inflation and employs an Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) bounds testing approach to test for co integration between inflation and its causes. The findings indicate that increased money supply, depreciation of the rupee and higher public wages are the major causes of inflation in both the short and long-run. Thus, it can be stated that inflation in Sri Lanka is affected by both demand and supply side factors, which highlights the importance of a prudent and effective implementation of the monetary and fiscal policies so as to ensure a stable macroeconomic environment in Sri Lanka.
