The Impact of Work-Life Balance on Employee Performance: Evidence from Budget Hotels in Belihuloya, Sri Lanka

Abstract

The hospitality industry’s labor-intensive nature and the pivotal role of operational staff in service delivery highlight the importance of understanding factors that influence employee performance. This study explores how work-life balance (WLB), including job content, personal attributes, and family-related factors, impacts performance among low-level employees in budget hotels in Belihuloya, Sri Lanka. A quantitative approach was employed with data collected from 210 employees using structured questionnaires. The findings reveal a strong positive relationship between job content, personal factors, and employee performance, while family factors show a modest effect. These insights are significant for developing targeted human resource strategies in resource-constrained hospitality settings. The study contributes to the under-researched context of WLB in Sri Lankan budget hotels and proposes practical recommendations for enhancing staff well-being and performance.
